Major League Baseball Player. Born in West Springfield, Massachusetts, he was a right handed pitcher making his debut for the New York Yankees on September 23, 1946. For ten seasons, he played with the New York Yankees (1946-53), St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 and Kansas City Athletics in 1955. While with the Yankees, he was elected to the All-Star team four times, (1948-50, 1952) and was a member of six Yankee World Series Championships, (1947, 1949-53). He ended his career with a record of 132 wins, 66 loss, 106 complete games, 26 shutouts, 3 saves, 944 strikeouts and a 3.72 earned run average. He died at age 69 in Groveland, New York.
