Douglas Dwight Fleming, 66, of Arab died Feb. 5, 2012, at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Fleming was born March 17, 1945, in Arab to Bethel and Argel Morrow Fleming. He was married to the former Doris Smith for more than 47 years.

He was a lifelong resident of the Arab area and was known by family and many friends as Harold or Pee Wee.

He honorably served in the United States Army from 1966-1968 and was a Vietnam veteran who served with the 359th Transportation Company in the Central Highlands. He retired from a 29-year career at PPG Industries, Inc. and then enjoyed interacting with acquaintances and friends as service writer at Clayton Chevrolet in Arab.

In 2006 he was elected as commissioner of Marshall County District 1. He was appointed and honored to serve as Chairman of the Marshall County Commission from 2007 to 2010.

He was a member of the Arab First Baptist Church, where he actively served as an ordained deacon. He participated in many church activities and civic functions including The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and United Way.

He is survived by his wife Doris Fleming; daughters and son-in-law: Christina Ridgeway of Arab and Zandra and Joe McDonald of Dora; four grandchildren: Logan Ridgeway, Jared Ridgeway, Jacob McDonald and Anna McDonald; sister: Nancy Wilks; brother and sister-in-law: Jimmy and Jeanene Fleming; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Douglas "Shorty" Fleming.

The funeral was at 2 p.m., Feb. 8, 2012, at Arab First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Murphy officiating. Burial was in Arab Memorial Cemetery.
