French Royalty. Sophie Philippine Élisabeth Justine de France, daughter of King Louis XV of France and his wife Queen Marie Leszczynska, was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was the sixth daughter and eighth child of the marriage. Unlike the first six children in the family, she was not raised at Versailles. Instead, Sophie and three of her sisters were sent when they were very young to the Abbey of Fontevraud. She returned to the palace as a teenager. The princess never married. When her father the king died in 1774, her nephew Louix XVI of France allowed Sophie and two of her three surviving sisters to remain at his court. (The third, Louise Marie, had become a nun.) The sisters retained their apartments in the palace. In 1776, her nephew Louis made Sophie Duchess of Louvois along with her sister Adélaïde. She died at the Palace of Versailles in 1782 and was interred at the Royal Basilica of Saint Denis. Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette named their youngest daughter after her.
