Henry Crane was born around 1635. The whereabouts of his birth and the identities of his parents are somewhat obscure. By 1655 he was well-established in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, where he and his brother Benjamin were farmers. On 17 August 1658, he and forty-nine others signed a petition for the dismissal of the Rev. John Russell from the pastorate of the Wethersfield Church.

He later removed to Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut, where he was listed as a planter in 1660. There he met, and around 1663 married, CONCURRENCE MEIGS, the daughter of John Meigs of Guilford and Thomasina Fry. The couple had ten children.
