Col. James P. McMakin, 73, husband of Mrs. Mary Kirby McMakin.

Col. McMakin was a 1957graduate from Union High School. He then joined the National Guard and served two tours in Vietnam. Col. McMakin earned a Masters Degree from Central Michigan State. He attended the Command and General Staff School in Ft. Leavenworth KS and Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Col. McMakin retired to Augusta after several tours and started McAir Aviation as a flight instructor. His passion was flying and teaching others to fly.

Family members in addition to his wife include: son: James D. McMakin of Atlanta; daughter: Deana Gregory of Greenville, SC; two grandsons: James A. McMakin and Holden Gregory; three great grandchildren: Ryan Knowles, Hayden McMakin and Isabella McMakin; brother: Jerry H. McMakin (Ret. US Navy); sister: Schelle Green, PhD. He was predeceased by his brother: Wallace T. McMakin (USMC) and mother: Rosalee Stroud McMakin.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. Interment Arlington National Cemetery.
