"Injury Fatal to G.W. Cobb: Owens X Roads Man Fractures Skull In Tumble From Truck"

George William Cobb, 66, received injuries that were fatal after toppling from the back end of a light truck. The truck came to a stop on a downtown street, and Mr. Cobb started to alight. The truck moved, causing him to lose his balance. He was a heavy man, weighing more than 200 pounds, and he was thrown to the concrete street where he struck his head and that resulted in a fractured skull. He died at Huntsville hospital about three hours after the fall and without regaining consciousness.

Wife: Mrs. Amanda Worley Cobb
Three daughters: Mrs. Herbert Hackworth of Huntsville, Mrs. E.D. Kilgore and Mrs. William Smith of Owens Cross Roads.
Three sons: Leslie Cobb of Birmingham, Leroy and Jesse Cobb of Owens Cross Roads.
Three sisters: Mrs. J.S. Owens and Mrs. Louis Lindsay of Empire, Ala., Mrs. P.T. Bell of Birmingham.
Two brothers: A.L. Cobb of Birmingham and J.W. Cobb of Mt. Pleasant, Ala.
Also surviving were 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services: Worley's chapel near Owens Cross Roads with John Jenkins, Church of Christ minister, officiating.

Burial: Chandler Cemetery

Active pallbearers: Artis Kelly, Fern Ellett, Joe Kelly, Roy Worley, Hugh Baker, Jess Wilson.

Honorary pallbearers: Alvin Ellett, Robert Craft, Roy Howell, J.A. Hackworth, J.B. Clopton, P. Chandler, Jown W. Chandler, and Joe Wade Chandler.

Deceased was a member of the Church of Christ.

George William Cobb was the son of John Cobb and Mary Ellen Christian.

In March, 1889, George William Cobb and Amanda Caroline Worley married in Marshall County, Alabama.

Most of the family members of George William Cobb had moved to the coal mining area around Walker County and Jefferson County, and in 1900 G.W. Cobb was also a coal miner in Jefferson County, Alabama. His wife, Amanda, and their two small daughters, Effie and Ethel, were with him.

By 1910, however, the small family had moved back to Madison County, Alabama where G.W. Cobb farmed for the rest of his life.

He and Amanda were parents of seven known children and of two children who died before 1900 as reported on the 1900 census. Their names are not known:

In 1920, the family was still in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. Their daughter, Effie Christine Cobb, died in 1927, at the young age of 32. She had married John Isaac Cobb and was survived by six children.

George William Cobb continued to farm and was 66 years old at the time of his accidental death.
