JOHN McCORMICK was born in 1771 in the Colleton District of South Carolina. He came to Mississippi about 1822, locating in what is now Jones county. Jones county was established Jan. 24, 1826, and along with other early residents, John was involved in establishing Jones county.
He moved to Jasper county in 1833-leaving the Methodist Episcopal church- he founded the first Methodist Protestant church in Mississippi, naming it Hopewell Methodist Protestant church. It is now the Hopewell United Methodist church,in the same location, with the cemetery on the north side of the church.
