George Williams Peckham was born March 23, 1845 in Albany, New York. In 1854 he moved to Milwaukee with his parents. Peckham served in the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery during the Civil War and became a First Lieutenant. He attended Antioch College in 1866 and graduated from the Albany Law School in 1867. In 1873 he received a medical degree from the University of Michigan.
From 1875 to 1885 Peckham taught Biology at Milwaukee's East Side High School and was the school's Principal from 1885 to 1892. He was Superintendent of the Milwaukee City Schools from 1892 to 1896.
Peckham married Elizabeth Gifford in 1880 and together they carried on scientific investigations in the field of entymology, specializing in the study of spiders and wasps. They published many books and articles on scientific subjects.
Peckham was a member of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters; its President from 1891 to 1893. He was President of the Wisconsin Natural History Society from 1884 to 1900 and President of the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Public Museum from 1892 to 1896. From 1896 to his retirement in 1910 he was librarian of the Milwaukee Public Library. Peckham died January 19, 1914.
