World War II Hero. He was an Army 82nd Airborne paratrooper whose parachute snagged the church steeple in Sainte-Mere-Eglise during the D-Day invasion. He was left hanging by his parachute as fighting was carried on below him and was later captured by German soldiers. He subsequently escaped and rejoined the Allies. His D-Day experience was portrayed in the 1962 film "The Longest Day" with Red Buttons playing him. For the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a dummy paratrooper hung from the bell tower of the church of Saint-Mere-Eglise in Normandy, France.
