Shields who was 6'00", and 196lbs, was a native of Ottawa, Ontario, and played the position of Defense for teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), International American Hockey League(IAHL), and the American Hockey League (AHL). He played for the Ottawa Senators from 1927 to 1930, and 1932 to 1934, Philadelphia Quakers from 1930 to 1931, New York Americans from 1931 to 1932, and 1936 to 1937, Montreal Maroons from 1934 to 1936, 1937 to 1938, Boston Bruins from 1936 to 1937, New Haven Eagles from 1938 to 1940, Buffalo-New Haven from 1940 to 1941, and the Washington Lions from 1941 to 1942.
