Born on the Nauman farm, Sec. 22, Peru Township, Dubuque County. Wounded in action on November 3, 1918, during the assault on La Borne de Cornouiller (Hill 378) by the U.S. 316th Infantry, 79th Division, east of Consenvoye, France. Evacuated to a field hospital, where he died of gangrene infection on November 14, three days after the Armistice. Body returned to the U.S. in December 1920 and conveyed to Dubuque. Burial, with full military honors, was at Ss. Peter and Paul Church and Cemetery, Sherrill, Iowa, on January 9, 1921 ("Body of War Hero Back from France," Dubuque Telegraph-Herald, Dec. 8, 1921, p. 3).
