Born in Hanover, he was the son of the late Tilden and Ella Louise (Martin) James.
He was a member of the St. Paul's (The Pines) Lutheran Church, New Chester. He served as pastor of New Chester Lutheran Parish from 1936 to 1940 and from 1965 until his death. He also served as pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Littlestown from 1940 to 1951 and Glen Rock Pastoral Charge from 1951 to 1965.
A 1929 graduate of Hanover High School, he graduated in 1933 from Susquehanna University and received a diploma in 1936 from the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg, where he also did his post graduate work.
He was a Sky Pilot of the Glen Rock Lions Club and served on the board of directors of the Hanover AARP. He also served as a president and secretary of the former Adamd District of the central Pennsylvania Synod and on various distict and synodical committees.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie M. (Slagle) James; one son Kenneth Slagle James of Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren; and one brother, Roger L. James of Hanover.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church with the Rev. Howard McCarney and the Rev. Arthur L. Ruths officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover.
Friends may call at Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, Wednesday evening, or at the church Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
