Long-time resident of The Pas, MB, Nonie Shewchuk (nee: Woroschuk) passed away peacefully with family by her side, at her home in St. Paul's Personal Care Home, Monday, June 14, 2010 at the age of 90 years. Nonie was born to Artemiza and Nestor Woroschuk near Calder, SK, Saturday, November 8, 1919. She was the second child born to them, having an older sister, Elsie, a younger sister, Mary, and a younger brother, Peter. Metro, her half-brother, was years older in age. As a young girl, while her sisters were helping in the house, Nonie helped her father on the farm, working with horse teams on the field in the summer and looking after cattle and hauling straw in the winter. She learned young to be a hard worker and this quality stayed with her throughout life.

On June 24, 1937, Nonie married Mike Shewchuk and they settled 4 ½ miles north of McNutt, SK, staying there for twenty years. In 1957 they moved to a farm in the Castleavery District along the Assiniboine River. The family operated a sawmill and raised cattle. As a young wife, Nonie wanted desperately to start a family and was thrilled when her first child, Mary, was born in August, 1939. Tragedy struck three weeks later when the baby died unexpectedly; then their second child, a son, Edward, also died in infancy. The next four children (Teen, Ivan, Daniel, Elias) were healthy and Nonie was a devoted homemaker, farm wife, and mother to them. She worked tirelessly every day both on the farm and in the house. It was common after a long day's work for Mike and Nonie to meet with friends for a social evening.

In 1961 after Ivan suffered a disabling accident, Nonie looked to find God in new ways and turned from her traditional beliefs. Nonie spent her last years as a member of the Watchtower Society. Mike and Nonie moved to the Pasquia Settlement near The Pas, MB in 1964 where they continued cattle and grain farming. Nonie was known for her huge, beautiful fruit and vegetable garden. She planted and preserved enough food for her family and others, giving generously to anyone in need. If she ever made money on her produce, she donated it to send children to camp or to feed the hungry, sponsoring World Vision children. Nonie took in foster children from time to time and for nine years worked as a part-time security guard. She and Mike loved to travel, especially to California to visit family as many of Nonie's aunts, uncles and cousins reside in California.

Nonie loved her family very much and showed this by preparing huge meals and picnics regularly. She made many quilts and paintings for them and was always generous in every way, keeping very little for herself. Her motto was "hold lightly to the things of this earth". Her heart's desire was to please God.In 1994 Mike and Nonie moved from the farm to Valhalla and for the past 5 years, St. Paul's had been her home. She was loved by the nurses and staff at St. Paul's and was never heard to complain about her lot in life. She was appreciative of every gesture, big and small, done on her behalf.

Nonie is survived by her four children - Teen (Ted) Hlady, Ivan Shewchuk, Daniel Shewchuk, Elias (Nancy) Shewchuk; sisters and brother - Elsie Todoschuk, Mary Kuryluk, Peter (Jean) Woroschuk; grandchildren – Teresa (Byron), Greg (Michelle), Adele, David, Amber (David), Glen, Carmen (Miles), Lance, Leah (Rod), Joel (Amy), Timothy (Julie), Deborah; great-grandchildren include; Kathy, Michael, Christopher, Jordon, Courtney, Ashton, Tanner, Riley, Ryan, Andrew, Laisha, Hilary, Zoe, Lorne, Peter, Anna, Jenna, Talia, Porter, Makae, Clara, Kelsie, Ethan, Eli, Zoe and great-great granddaughter - Isabel.

She was predeceased by her parents - Artemiza (1955) and Nestor Woroschuk (1964); her husband - Mike (1996); her infant children - Mary (1939), Edward (1942). The funeral service for Nonie was held Friday, June 18, 2010, 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas with James Hemauer and Rev. Woody Ruten presiding. Music Ministry was provided by Elma Dean and a musical tribute was performed by great granddaughter Talia Geurts. Memories were shared by sons Elias and Daniel Shewchuk.

Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, MB. Pallbearers were Nonie's grandsons, Greg Hlady, David Hlady, Glen Shewchuk, Lance Shewchuk, Joel Shewchuk, Timothy Shewchuk. Honorary Pallbearers were All of Nonie's Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren and Great-Great-Grandchild.
