John Calvin Briggs, life-long resident of the Quaker Street area, died Saturday morning at his home in Quaker Street following a long illness. he was 89.

Mr. Briggs was widely known for his agricultural interests, and prior to his retirement, he had served 48 years as sales manager of the American Agricultural Chemical Co. He often related that one of his special assignments for the company was a trip to Washington, where he spent two weeks contacting government in the interest or passage in the Senate of the bill pertaining to chemicals and fertilizers.

Born on the homestead two miles west of Quaker Street. Mr. Briggs grew up on the farm which has been in the family for more than 200 years. The homestead is one of the oldest structures in the Town of Duanesburg. The farm was part of the original Duane grant.

Mr. Briggs was a son of Cyrus and Ann Wilson Briggs. He was married to Bertha Wemple on Nov 24, 1886. She died in 1949. During his entire lifetime Mr. Briggs had lived either on the homestead farm, or his Quaker Street village farm. During many summers in late years the family would go to the homestead farm for several months.

Mr. Briggs, was a member of Noah Lodge, F&AM of Altamont; Cypress Temple of Albany; the York Rite bodies, IOOF,and the First Christian church in Quaker Street. He had formerly served many years as trustee of the;church. A life-long Republican, he was active in Republican party work.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs, Kenneth MacDonald of Albany; son, Walter Briggs, at home; four grandchildren, Dr. Seward MacDonald, Lieutenant D. Kenneth MacDonald, Jr., Mrs. Elwood Lawton and John C. Briggs, 2nd. He also leaves five great-grandchildren; a sister, J Mrs. Minnie Briggs Zimmer of Albany; and several nieces and nephews.

Masonic funeral services were conducted Monday night from the home. Funeral services were from the home Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Morris Skinner, pastor of the First Lutheran church in Albany, officiated. Burial was in Grove cemetery in Quaker Street.

QUAKER STREET Film star Ginger Rogers became a godmother over the weekend.

The actress and her Hollywood script writer husband John C. Briggs 2nd. attended a 60th wedding anniversary celebration for Briggs' grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Briggs in this Schenectady county hamlet yesterday. They witnessed the baptism of the Briggs five-month old great granddaughter and were named god-parents. The baby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Lawton, was named Virginia for her godmother, who has no children. Ginger and her husband planed to leave today for Cincinnati to attend a preview of "Magnificent Doll" in which she Is starred.


The Thanksgiving season has always had a special significance to one Quaker Street couple, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Briggs. Among the oldest residents of the village, Mr. and Mrs. Briggs celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Wednesday. A feature of the celebration was a dinner party at the home of their grandaughter Martha Briggs Lawton.
Lifelong residents of Quaker Street, Mr. Briggs was born in the village 85 years ago, son of Cyrus and Louise Wilson Briggs. He owns the old Briggs homestead which has been in the family for two centuries. Mrs. Briggs, who is 80 years old, is the daughter of Abram I. and Evelyn Wilber Wemple. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs were married Nov. 24, 1886, in Quaker Street, by the late Rev. Gideon A, Carr. They have always lived in the village. Eight years ago Mr. Briggs retired from his work with the American Agricultural Chemical Co., a position he had held for 47 years.
The Briggs have one daughter, Mrs. D. Kenneth MacDonald (Grace)of Albany; and one son, Walter W. Briggs of Quaker Street. They have four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One of their grandsons, Jack Briggs, is the husband of Ginger Rogers. Attending the dinner party were Mr. and Mrs. Briggs, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Lawton, Shirley, David and Virginia Lawton.

John and Bertha had another daughter by the name of Grace Briggs McDonald. Grace was the wife of Dewitt K McDonald.
