Annie Modine (Hap) Mayfield, 93, Playas, New Mexico, passed away on July 29, 2011, at Mountain View Hospital in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Annie was born on February 12, 1918 in Lubbock, Texas to Perry and Pearl Barnes. Annie graduated from Sudan High School, Sudan, Texas, and was married to J. F. (Jim) Mayfield in Sudan on March 12, 1938. They moved to La Plata County Colorado in 1938, and ranched in the southern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico area until 1990 when they moved to Hidalgo County, in southwestern New Mexico to a family ranching operation. Annie was a lifetime rancher and ranch wife with her priorities in life being family, her faith and ranching. Annie was a member of National Cattlemen's Beef Association, American Quarter Horse Association, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, Hidalgo County Cattle Grower's Association and Tobosa Belles.
Annie is survived by her husband Jim, son, James (Butch) and his wife, Amanda of Playas, New Mexico, granddaughter Leann Saunders and her husband, John, children; Kenneth, Hannah and Katie of Castle Rock, Colorado, granddaughter Melinda Birkeland and her husband, Clay, children; Riley, Cain and Payson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, two sisters, Clara Carter of Midland, Texas, Opal Lechner of Ignacio, Colorado, sister-in-law, Gladys Barnes, Ignacio, Colorado, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives of the Barnes and Mayfield families.
Services will be held on August 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Crestview Memorial Gardens in Falfa, Colorado. Memorial donations may be sent in her name to Cal Farleys Boys Ranch, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174.
