Physicist. He was leader of the cyclotron group and later head of the Physics Research Division for the Manhattan Project. Founding director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Studies at Cornell University (1947 to 1967) and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois (1967 to 1978). Pioneer in the use of accelerated hadrons for cancer therapy.
