Viola M. "Vi" Herbsleb was born April 2, 1910 in Charles City, Iowa; the daughter of William & Anna (Sturm) Melvold. She was united in marriage to Alfred J. Herbsleb January 15,1935 in Pekin, Illinois. She had been employed at Iowa Public Service for 13 years until retiring. She was a member of Happy Thought Rebekah #256.
Viola would rather be digging in the dirt, gardening and growing flowers than doing housework. She was an expert seamstress, and she enjoyed traveling especially when going south to winter in Texas. Viola dearly loved her family. She was particularly fond of her grandchildren; she would stop whatever she was doing to spend time with them.
At the age of 93 years, Viola passed away at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Monday, February 2, 2004.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter; and a brother, Wilfred Melvold.
She is survived by
her beloved husband of 69 years, Alfred;
a son, Donald Herbsleb & his wife, Pat, of Waterloo, Iowa;
3 grandchildren: Tammy Sorenson & her husband Tim, of Bettendorf, Iowa; Steve Herbsleb of Waterloo, Mark Herbsleb & his wife Paige, of Grimes, Iowa;
7 great-grandchildren: Joshua Sorenson, Anna Sorenson, Leah Sorenson, Heather Herbsleb, Haley Herbsleb, Logan Herbsleb, and Luke Herbsleb;
2 sisters, Eleanor Bruness and Lorraine Tuttle both of Waterloo.
Casket Bearers: Steve Herbsleb, Mark Herbsleb, Erwin Luloff, Forrest Dillavou, Tim Sorenson, Joshua Sorenson
Viola will be greatly missed.
Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1024 2. 8th St. in Waterloo.
