Princess, Duchess. Marie Louise Élisabeth de France, eldest child of King Louis XV of France and his wife Queen Marie Leszczynska, was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was a twin to her sister Henriette de France. She was raised at Versailles with her twin sister and four of their younger siblings. However, at age twelve, the princess was engaged to Philip of Spain, son of King Philip V of Spain and his second wife Elizabeth of Parma. They were married by proxy on August 26, 1739. The twelve-year-old met her nineteen-year-old husband near Madrid, and the ceremony took place on October 25, 1739. Louise Élisabeth gave birth to three children. Isabella, born in 1741, married the Austrian emperor Joseph II. Ferdinand, born in 1751, succeeded his father as Duke of Parma. And Maria Luisa, born later the same year, became Queen of Spain. In 1748, after the end of the War of the Austrian Succession, Philip and Louise Élisabeth became the Duke and Duchess of Parma. The new Duchess went to Versailles for an extended visit and grew to like her father's mistress Madame de Pompadour, to the dismay of her younger siblings. Her twin sister Henriette died in 1752. The Duchess returned to France to visit her tomb, but ended up staying at Versailles for months. During another visit to France, she fell ill with smallpox and died at the Palace of Versailles on December 6, 1759 at the age of 32. Louise Élisabeth of France was interred at the Royal Basilica of Saint-Denis beside her twin sister Henriette.
