TOOK POISON BY MISTAKE
R. E. Smith, a druggist at Leonard, died Friday from the effects of a dose of corrosive sublimate, taken by mistake several days prior. Mr. Smith was in the habit of taking a soda preparation for some stomach trouble, he had a jar of it at his prescription counter, when a customer asked for corrosive sublimate. He got the jar containing the poison, filled the order, and set the jar beside the other one on his desk. After his customer left, he took a dose of what he thought was the soda preparation. As soon as he swallowed it, he realized from the taste that he had made a mistake and rushed at once to Dr. Gerard's home for medical assistance. The doctor did all that could be done, but the dose was a large one and its effects could not be counteracted. He took the poison Tuesday evening and died Friday morning.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Leonard, conducted by the Rev. J. H. Wood of Shelbina, assisted by the Rev. Kuntz of Canton. Deceased was 59 years of age. He was married about two years ago to Mrs. Mazo Wright, who survives him. He was a brother of J. P. and Lon Smith of Leonard.

ACCIDENTAL POISONING
R. E. Smith, Leonard Drugist, Took Corrosive Sublimate Thinking It Was Pepsin.
R. E. Smith, for a number of years a druggist and leading citizen of Leonard, died last Friday from the effects of a dose of corrosive sublimate taken by mistake Tuesday evening before.
He had been in the habit of taking pepsin for indigestion and after taking a dose set the bottle in the accustomed place.
A customer asked for a quantity of corrosive sublimate and after the customer was waited upon Mr. Smith is supposed to have set the poisinous drug along side of the pepsin. Just before starting to supper he took, as he supposed, a dose of pepsin, but, instead, got the corrosive sublimate. He realized his mistake at once and sent for Dr. Gerard, who did all that could be done, but to no avail, and the unfortunate man passed away Friday morning.
The deceased was 59 years old at the time of his death and leaves a widow, two brothers, J. P. and Lon, besides other relatives and friends who mourn his untimely death.
Funeral services were held at Leonard Sunday, conducted by Rev. H. Wood, of this city. The interment was in the Leonard cemetery.
