The Vieley Cemetery stone inscription listing published by Roscoe Leak has the following entry:

J. L. Davidson
Co C, 51 Reg Ind Vol
d. Dec. 31, 1864
aged 32 years, 8 months, 14 days

Note the death date seems to agree with the photograph of his stone. The stone appears to have an engraving of a cannon and a flag indicating military service.

The Indiana State Digital Archives web site has this Civil War service record entry for a James L. Davidson:

Date Enrolled: Oct. 7, 1861
Age (presumably at enrollment): 28
Where enrolled: Lizton, Indiana (Note Lizton was still known as New Elizabeth in 1860 so this is probably not a period entry)
Regiment: 51
Company: C
Discharge date: July 12, 1862
Notes: Pvt. Discharged at Indianapolis, IN, July 12, 1862, for Disability.

A second Civil War service record for a James L. Davidson shows:

Date Enrolled: Oct. 2, 1863
Where enrolled: Indianapolis
Regiment: 51
Company: C
Discharge date: Dec. 31, 1864
Notes: Recruit. Pvt. Died at Indianapolis, IN. Dec. 31, 1864, of Disease.

So it appears James L. Davidson reenlisted in 1863 after his disability discharge in 1862 and died of disease on Dec. 31, 1864.

The 1850 Census shows a James Davidson (age 17) living in Middle Township (which then included Union Township) with Claybourn (age 45) and Bersheba (age 35) Davidson. Boone County marriage records show Claybourn and Bersheba were married in 1839 so James' mother was likely an earlier wife of Claybourn.

James Davidson married Luvica Adams. They were the parents of a daughter, Mary E., and sons Will (born ~1856) and Clayborn (born ~1857). In the 1870 Census, Will (age 14) and Clayborn (age 13) Davidson are shown as domestic servants living in Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. Their mother, Luvica, had remarried to Hiram Toney in 1869.
