William was one of eight children born to William Warren and Lucina R. Gilbert Wagar. When he was around three, his parents moved to Henry County, Illinois where his younger siblings were all born. Unfortunately, his mother died in 1874, and shortly thereafter his father and his mother's mother, Speda Minerva Tyler Gilbert, moved the whole family to the Richardson, Nebraska area. William G. Wagar would eventually marry Susannah Frances Rollier and have five children. About the turn of the century, the family moved to Washington where William would begin working for the railroad. He and his family eventually settled in Missoula, Montana.
