Thomas Irwin Mace, 60, of 1127 Vine Street, caretaker at the county fairgrounds, died Sunday at the state hospital at Galen. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Squire-Simmons-Carr Rose Chapel by Rev. M. J. McPike. Burial will be in Missoula Cemetery.Mr. Mace was born March 22, 1890 in Lexington, Nebraska. He went from there to New Mexico and Colorado and came to Hamilton in 1909, working as a sawyer in logging mills in the Bitter Root.He was married February 8, 1912, in Hamilton to Mary Popham who survives him. Shortly after the marriage, the couple moved to a ranch near Hamilton, where he lived until 1919, when he came to Missoula to work for the Northern Pacific Railway.In 1925 he returned to the Bitter Root Valley to ranch until 1930. Since then he had lived in Missoula, working in the dry cleaning departments of the Missoula Laundry Company and the City Cleaners until retirement. About 13 months ago, he went to work as caretaker at the fairgrounds.Besides the widow, he is survived by five sons, Albert and Thomas, Jr., both of Missoula; James, who is stationed with the Army in Germany, and Franklin and Gerald, both in the Army at Fort Lewis, Washington; three daughters, Mrs. L. G. Ferrell of Missoula, Mrs. Frank Lockwood of Whitefish, and [Mrs. Frank Winsper]; one sister, Vera Locke of Lavina, California; four brothers, Franklin of Washington, D. C., Harold of Avery, Idaho, Abraham of San Jose, California, and Ezra of Missoula; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.The Missoulian, December 25, 1950
