He was the son of John Snyder and Letitia Sprigg Marshall.
On November 4, 1822 as Samuel C. Snyder, he married Ann Gibbs at Washington County, Maryland.
They were the parents of two children. A daughter, Mrs. B.S. Roe is mentioned in a June 1881 news article about his illness and found as Anna Snyder born about 1827 in Virginia on the 1850 Census.
