Hawkinsville (Ga.) Dispatch, Tuesday, Mar. 8, 1888: We regret to announce the death of Mr. Arthur Newman, a clever and good old citizen of this county. He died very suddenly with heart disease at his home three miles below Hawkinsville on Tuesday afternoon, March 6th, 1888. He had been up attending to business during the day, and had undertaken of a hearty dinner. His daughter, Mrs. Sheriff Hunt, reached him a few minutes before death. Mr. Newman was seventy-three years of age, and had lived in Pulaski County about forty-five years (sic). His remains were buried this [Wednesday] afternoon in the family burial ground near his old home three miles above Hawkinsville. [Robert K. Nobles, Marriages, Deaths, and Etc. from Hawkinsville Dispatch (Georgia), 1870-1888, p. 356].

Arthur moved with his parents and siblings to Pulaski County, Georgia from Sampson County, North Carolina in the late 1820s.

In about 1840 he married Canzada Shiver, daughter of Abraham and Martha Shiver, and widow of James P. Cherry. Canzada Newman died on 11 Oct 1880 (Nobles, p. 155) and Arthur married Martha Sanders, daughter of Miles and Winnifred Sanders, on 26 Oct 1881. Martha died of apoplexy (stroke) on 14 Mar 1885 (Nobles, p. 278).

Arthur and Canzada had 11 children together: Catherine, married William G. Hunt; James, died at Savage's Station, Virginia in 1862; Abraham William, m(1) Lucy Fenn and (2) Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Conner; Sarah Jane, married David F. Matthews; Georgia Anne, married Stephen Daniel; Susan, married John K. Partin; Anna A., married W. Hardy Kinchen and died on 11 Dec 1880 (Nobles, p. 159); Nancy Carolyn, married Remus Romulus Woods; Mary Rebecca, died on 16 Dec 1880 (Nobles, p. 159); Arthur John, married Emma Love and died on 17 Dec 1880 (Nobles, p. 159); and Fannie Alice, married James S. Frink.

There were no children from Arthur and Martha's marriage.

According to his death notice, Arthur was buried in "the family burial ground near his old home three miles above Hawkinsville" and this is likely the final resting place of other members of his family as well: his children Anna, Rebecca and John; his wives Canzada and Martha; his father John, died in Nov 1852 (estate documents); mother Nancy, died in Jan 1860 (mortality schedule); brother Edward, died in Nov 1879 (mortality schedule); and sister Sarah, died Aug-Nov 1889 (Arthur's estate documents).

My sincere thanks to Donna Rickerson for the gravestone photograph.
