Josie Rhea Chism Archer Totusek, 91, passed away on May 24, 2008. She was born on March 1, 1917 to Robert Lee Chism and Anna Elizabeth Nicks of Holly Grove, AR, the sixth child of eight children. After losing her father at the age of 14, sacrifice was no stranger to Josie, who continued with her family pressing through many tragedies. Despite the nation's depression, war, and many personal trials, Josie successfully graduated from high school and remained in her hometown, Holly Grove. Josie was the last to pass of her childhood family.
After graduating she married her high school sweetheart, Marvin Archer in 1938. In the midst of raising their children, Joanne, Marvin "Mack", and Camille Archer, they also built a successful automotive business. With tenacity and hard work they overcame the strain of the war on their business and continued to prosper. Regretfully, after 29 years the marriage ended in 1967. Starting a new life, Josie and her youngest daughter moved to Kentucky leaving the only home she knew.
In 1971 she relocated to Everett, WA to marry Paul E. Totusek and live out the remainder of her life. They soon discovered a new love of traveling across the states visiting family, friends, and exploring many of our countries sites. At 65 Josie started attending aerobic classes and faithfully continued till the strong age of 89. Life would present a new trial of breast cancer, which she overcame, unfortunately it was her heart that determined how her last days were to be lived out.
Known by her loved ones as "Mam-Maw", Josie's southern charm made every stranger feel like an old friend. Without fail she warmed the hearts of many. Family, laughter, music, friends and her faith in God were the needed ingredients to see her through a full life. She will be dearly mossed and greatly treasured by all that found the gift of being near her. The memory of her survived within her husband, Paul; her children, Joanne (Jim) Moss, Mack (Paula) Archer, and Camille Archer; her step-children, Connie Snider, Debbie (Denny) Rosener, and Jeffrey (Julie) Totusek; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; beloved nephew and nieces; great-nephews and nieces; and countless friends.
A special thank you to the Visiting Angels and Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County team for guiding Josie and her loved ones through every transition with understanding, loving care and incomparable skill, you made all the difference.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be a gathering of family and friends at 10 a.m. on May 31, 2008, in the chapel of Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA. 98203.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sisters of the Holy Names, 2911 W. Fort Wright Dr. Spokane, WA 99224 or Providence Hospice, 2731 Wetmore, Suite 500, Everett, WA 98201.
