Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1861, and enlisted in the 34th New York Independent Volunteer Light Artillery on September 5, 1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia on June 18, 1864. His citation reads "As gunner of his piece, inflicted singly a great loss upon the enemy and distinguished himself in the removal of the piece while under a heavy fire". His Medal was awarded to him on July 30, 1896. Promoted to Corporal on April 30, 1864, he was reduced to Private on January 1, 1865, and was honorably mustered out at Hart's island, New York Harbor, New York on June 21, 1865.
