Samuel Swift was born in 1826, probably in Hartford, Washington County, New York where his father and some siblings were born. The family was living in Allegany, New York in 1840[, and ten years later most of them had moved near Brantford, Ontario. In 1851 Samuel was unmarried and living with his parents. In 1871 he was living with his widowed mother and his brother, Utter, in Norfolk County. In the 1880s, like many of his siblings, Samuel was living in Michigan with a young wife named Melvina and a young son. He remained there until his death in 1895.
