Philip was the youngest child of Austrian immigrant farmers Joseph & Mary (Bitters) Lantzy. In 1861, he enlisted in the Civil War as a private with the "Cambria Guards" (Co. A) of the 11th Penn. Infantry Regiment. He was killed in action during the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, MD. The Union soldiers were collected and interred in what is now the Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, which was dedicated on Sep 17, 1867.

The Gotlieb Memorial Gallery in Mugar Memorial Library at Boston University exhibits the Philip Lantzy Collection of his letters from 1861 to August, 1862.
