Tilghman Luther Grossnickle was born April 12, 1860, in Woodsboro District, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Daniel and Ella (Blessing) Grossnickle. On October 6, 1886, in Frederick County, he married Alice May Carmack, daughter of Joshua and Amanda (Eiler) Carmack. They were the parents of the following 8 children: Kansie Grace (1887-1894), Infant Daughter (a twin of Kansie Grace) (1887-1887), Mary Key (1889-1986), Joshua Carmack (1892-1947), Infant Son (a twin of Joshua Carmack) (1892-1892), Rhoda (1894-1894), Phoebe Ellen (1897-1982), and Wilbur Luther (1899-1971). Tilghman passed away June 2, 1945, in Woodsboro District, and was buried on the 5th in Haugh's Church Cemetery, Ladiesburg, Frederick County, Maryland.

"Tilghman L. Grossnickle, son of Daniel and Ellen (Blessing) Grossnickle, grew to manhood on his father's farm in Woodsboro District, and received his learning at Grove Academy, close to the old home, under Doctor Stitely, E. O. Norris, Alice Bowers, Mr. Dupey and Adam Roser. When he was about nineteen years old, he gave up attending school. He worked for his father until the latter's death, and he then carried on the farm for one year. In 1886, Mr. Grossnickle was married, and the succeeding three years lived with his father- in- law. He then went to farming on the L.F. Miller farm, now occupied by J.C. Mentzer. From there he went to the A.D. Birely farm in Woodsboro District, staying for two years. His next residence was on the Michael Lippy farm at Rocky Ridge, where he was located for one year. Mr. Grossnickle then, in the spring of 1897, came to his present farm, which is one of the best in that locality. Mr. Grossnickle is progressive and a hustler. He is a believer in up- to- date methods and by the use of such has been enabled to secure large crops. Although he is an ardent Republican, Mr. Grossnickle does not take an active part in politics. He is not a member of any church. Mr. Grossnickle was married October 7,1886, to Alice Carmack, of Woodsboro District. She is a daughter of Joshua and Amanda (Eyler) Carmack, and was born in Woodsboro District,February 23, 1859. She acquired her education at Grove Academy, and is a member of Haugh's Lutheran Church. She is the mother of six children: Kansie Grace, was born August 17, 1887, and died September 17, 1894; Mary Key, born October 11, 1889; Joshua Carmack, born March 24, 1892; Rhoda, born February 15, 1894, and died September 13, 1894; Phoebe Ellen, born November 19, 1897; and Wilbur Luther, born May 15, 1899.Joshua Carmack, the father of Mrs. Grossnickle, was born on the old Carmack farm, near Haugh's Church, Frederick County, April 3, 1827. He received a common school education, and followed day laboring. He was married to Amanda Eyler, daughter of John and Catharine (Miller) Eyler. Mr. Carmack died August 2, 1892, and is buried with his wife at Haugh's Church Cemetery. She died August 4, 1894. They had issue: Mary Catharine, who was born October 31, 1856, married Henry Keilholtz, and died of typhoid fever in 1893; and Alice (Mrs. Grossnickle). John Carmack, the grandfather of Mrs. Grossnickle, was engaged in farming in Woodsboro District, near Detour. He was married to Ida M. Wolf, and had these children: Hanson, William, John, Ephraim, Joshua, Sophia, Sarah and Margaret."

"Tilghman Luther Grossnickle, well-known retired farmer of Detour, died Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home of complications following an illness extending over the past three months. He was 85 years, one month and 20 days of age. The deceased was born and lived his entire life in Woodsboro District, near Detour. He was a member of the Rocky Ridge Church of the Brethren and was a lifelong Republican. He was a son of the late Daniel and Ella Blessing Grossnickle. He is survived by his wife, Alice M. Carmack Grossnickle and the following children: Mrs. Raymond E. Martz, Westminster; Joshua Grossnickle, Hyattsville; Mrs. Raymond Albaugh and Wilbur Grossnickle, Detour; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon with brief services at the late residence at 1 o'clock. Elders Elmer P. Schildt and Samuel Weybright and Rev. Herbert H. Schmidt will officiate. Interment in Haugh's Cemetery. M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors."

"TILGHMAN L. GROSSNICKLE. Funeral services for Tilghman L. Grossnickle of near Detour were held Tuesday afternoon in Rocky Ridge Church of God at 1:30 o'clock with Elders Elmer P. Schildt and Samuel Weybright and Rev. Herbert H. Schmidt officiating. The services were largely attended and the church choir sang 'We Are Going Down The Valley' and 'The Old Rugged Cross.' Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased: George, Richard, Orville and Chalmer Grossnickle, Joseph Coleman and Isaac Saylor. Interment in Haugh's Cemetery. M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors."

"For Sale. October 20, 1945, at 12 o'clock noon on the premises, the farm of the late T. L. Grossnickle. Farm containing 140 acres, 12 acres pasture adjoining creek, located 1 mile west of Detour, Carroll County, Maryland. Improved with brick house, bank barn and all necessary outbuildings. Terms of sale to be made known on the day of sale. JOSHUA C. GROSSNICKLE, MARY G. K. MARTZ, PHEBE G. E. ALBAUGH, WILBUR GROSSNICKLE."

Descendants of George William Michael and Ella Mae Handley Albaugh and Tilman and Alice Carmack Grossnickle held their 14th family reunion on September 8, at the Memorial Park in Taneytown. John Boone gave the invocation before the buffet picnic lunch. Prizes were awarded to the oldest woman, Harriet Grossnickle and to the oldest men, Walter Ramsburg and Bud Speak, and to Harriet Grossnickle and Tina Spurlock for coming the longest distance, Florida.
