OBIT: Wado R. Bush, Ephrata

Wado R. Bush, a resident of Ephrata since 1935, died on Jan. 9, 2001, surrounded by family and friends. Wado was born on Feb. 23, 1911, in Hooker, OK, the third child of Lawrence and Elnora Bush.

Wado grew up in the small farming community of Clearfield, IA, where he excelled in football (running back), basketball (shooting guard), baseball (excellent pitcher; lifetime batting average over .400) and track (overall point leader in all events in county track meet his senior year) in Clearfield High School, from which he graduated in 1930. He was offered an athletic scholarship to Drake University, but was forced to decline to work, since the Depression was near at hand.

At the urging of his aunt, Wado "went west" to Ephrata in 1935, where he worked for the highway department and harvested wheat each fall. He asked Margaret Bailey to join him and they were married April 3, 1937.

From 1940 to 1949, Wado was a Deputy with the Grant County Sheriff's Office and loved to tell stories of his wild and dangerous experiences. From 1949 to 1957, Wado operated the golf course in Sun Lakes Park, just north of Ephrata. It provided a nurturing environment to raise his family, not to mention take up his new passion of golf. From 1957, until he retired, Wado drove a school bus for the Ephrata School District, where his passengers became some of his most ardent admirers, many of whom visited him in his final hours.

In retirement, Wado was happiest. Whether he was hunting, fishing, golfing or playing Gin Rummy at the Lakeview Golf & Country Club, he was a true sportsman with unwavering sportsman-like conduct (except for his temper), and uninterrupted focus on winning.

Wado was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret, to whom he was faithfully married and devoted for 53 years; and his yappy dog, Moukee.

Wado is survived by his daughter, Marcia Ellen Bush; his son, Wado Joe Bush; his grandson, Bryan Emerson Bush; and his granddaughter, Ally Cavaletto Bush; a special niece, Joan Wiley and her husband, Keith of Lakeview; and many other nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all!

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Nicoles Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may visit the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, from 1 to 4 p.m.
