ROBERT GWINN HILL was the 4th of 6 children born to Lewis C. Hill and his 2nd wife, Isabel Whitson. Robert was born in Wilson Co., TN but the family moved to the Rock Bridge area of Sumner Co. in 1845. Robert was raised on the family farm. The family were members of the Dry Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Robert's siblings from his parent's marriage were:

Brothers: Lycurgus, died young; William, killed at Battle of Shiloh; and Jesse Jennings..
Robert's half-siblings from his father's 1st marriage to Duritha Rieff were: Catherine Ann and Abner Taurus
Robert's half –siblings from his father's 3rd marriage to Mary Ann Conner Bradley were: Pernina Jane and John Irvin

In August 1861, Robert and his brother William enlisted in Co. E, 24th TN, CSA. They fought side by side until William was fatally wounded at the Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862. Robert went on to fight in the battles of Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Atlanta, Georgia. He was promoted to Sargent. He was Paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 16, 1865. He walked back home and resumed farming.

Robert's mother had died in 1863, and his father remarried before Robert returned from the War. Robert's unmarried sisters, Elizabeth and Dealla lived with him from 1865 until his death.

Robert married Sophia Melinda Reddick Dec. 8, 1867 in Sumner Co. Sophia was the daughter of John Ashley Reddick and Sarah Hodges. They had 3 children: Isabel, John Louis, and James William.

About 1901, Robert, his wife Sophia and his sisters moved south of Gallatin on Long Hollow Pike. His son James Will had purchased a large farm there and was operating a wholesale garden business. Their home is now the Clubhouse of the Long Hollow Pike golf course.

At the time of his death, Robert was one of only four surviving veterans of the 24th TN. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church. He was a Mason.

Abraham and Lydia Whitson, who lived in Wilson Co., TN

Robert's Great-Grandfather Jesse Whitson, Sr., and GG Grandfather William Whitson, Jr., were both SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION in North Carolina.
