Robert G. Dickson, age 94, of Bellville passed away Monday, April 8, 2019.

Robert was born at home on November 18, 1924, near Oates Crossing, Arkansas. His parents were the late Wilbur D. Dickson and Eula B. Oates Dickson. Robert had a very rewarding and full life that included family, church, community, farm and youth of several generations. He was a strong advocate of education for both his children and all area youth. He supported the 4-H, the Ruritan Student Scholarship Program, and, with his wife, established a permanent scholarship at Arkansas Tech University for promising western Yell County youth. He was also an active member of the Havana Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Yell County Cattlemen’s Association, Yell County Farm Bureau, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the 82nd Airborne Ripcord Association.

Robert served during WWII with the 82nd Airborne. This experience was a major factor in forming the balance of his life. He participated in the Normandy invasion, Operation Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge, and crossing the Elbe River on a final drive to Berlin. He was dropped in to Normandy and Nijmegen, Netherlands, in a glider and always wondered why he survived when so many did not. He fought through the Bulge in summer clothing and suffered frostbite. In the move to Berlin, the 21st German Army surrendered to his platoon and they freed a concentration camp. What he saw there always weighed heavy on his mind.

He returned from the war to marry his high-school sweetheart Dorothy, purchased a farm, and adjusted to quieter life. Robert started building chicken houses in 1956 and converted from row cropping to a very successful cattle and chicken operation. He was among the first farmers in the area to make this change.

He was probably most comfortable watching baseball or basketball games, following the Razorbacks, and working in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Robert hunted until he was 90 and celebrated his 90th birthday by killing a 10 point buck. He never let his family forget about it.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Buckman Dickson; his parents; his brothers David Dickson and W.P. Dickson; his sisters Elizabeth Horn and Martha Laster; and son-in-law Stan McFerran.

Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, Robert L & Elisa Dickson of Harrison; daughter Peggy McFerran of Imperial, Missouri; grandchildren Karen McFerran, Tiffany Rauch-Dickson, Stephen McFerran, and Michael McFerran; great-grandchildren Kathryn McFerran, Jacob

McFerran, Asher Pruitt, and Elliot Rauch-Dickson; and sister Janette Gwazda of East Chicago, Indiana.

The funeral service will be held 10am Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the Havana Methodist Church with Bro. Tom Sullinger and Bro. John McCourt officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Havana Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Bob Rogers, Charlie Bennett, David Laster, Ronald Laster, Tommy Fink, Wick Stapleton, Charles Webster, Steve Wagner, Nicolas Garcia, and Robert Mitch
