Ms. Mary Louise Bates, 43, of Blackville, entered into peaceful rest at the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012. A celebration of life in loving memory of Ms. Bates was held Sunday, Jan. 15, 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Olar. Pastor Harold Shepherd officiated. Interment took place in the Blackville Cemetery of Blackville, South Carolina.
Friends visited the family Jan. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Blackville and at the residence in Blackville.
Mary Bates, affectionately known by her loved ones as "Louise" and "Doon", was born in Blackville, Nov. 6, 1968, to Clary Ella and Charles Odom Sr.
Early in life, she joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Lees. She later moved by letter to Tabernacle Baptist Church, Blackville, and subsequently to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Olar, where she was a member until her death.
"Louise" graduated from Blackville-Hilda High School, Blackville. Upon graduation, she worked as a Dryer Feeder for many years at Talley Corbett Company of Springfield. She was later employed by Lifetime Doors Inc. of Denmark, where she remained until the decline of her health.
"Louise" enjoyed being with her family and friends, helping the elderly and going to the flea markets.
She will always be fondly remembered for her pleasant personality, shy smile, jovial laugh and for always unselfishly giving back to her church, community and to all of those who were blessed to know her.
Those left to cherish her memories are: her parents: Clary Ella and Charles Odom Sr. of Blackville; a very special friend, Henry Wroten of Blackville; two sisters; Margie Ann Lee (Lee Edward) and Willie Mae (Robert) Smalls, all of Blackville; one adopted sister, Tonyelle Harrison of Orangeburg; one brother, Charles Odom Jr. of Blackville; one adopted brother, Corterra Woodley of Barnwell; her god-mother, Mary Louise Harley of New York, N.Y.; nine aunts; Hattie, Remell and Annie Bell Harley, of Blackville, Peggie White of Blackville, Dorothy (Gene) Ray and Ethel Mae Harley, both of New York, N.Y., Dorothy Harley of Atlanta, Ga., Annie Mae (Willie) Gerrick of Denmark, and Hannah Singleton of Florida; three uncles; Joseph Harley, William (Elouise) Harley and Hezekiah (Eldora) Odom, all of Blackville; 16 nieces and nephews, three grandnieces and a host of cousins and friends, two special friends; Angle Creech of Blackville, and Eartha Lawton of Springfield.
