She was a daughter of Enok Ostvold/Enoch Eastwold and his wife Ellen Olena Freland (Vreeland) from Norway who settled into a Norwegian community in 4 Mile Creek, Kaufman Co TX and attended the Four Mile Lutheran Church there.

However after the death of her husband, Bertha moved to Van Zandt Co TX by the April 29, 1910 census where she is enumerated as "Mattie Fryer" a widow, living with Annie Fryer age 18, William 'Martin' Fryer age 16, Emmett Fryer age 12. Income from the family in 1910 was listed as 'odd jobs'. In the 1920 census Bertha Marie Fryer (widow, age 65) and youngest son Emmett (22) are living in the household of her son William Martin Fryer in Dallas, TX. Bertha Marie Fryer died in Dallas Co. TX where her son William Martin Fryer resided.
