Shirley C. Makarsky, 69, of Apalachin, N.Y., passed away Saturday, December 10, 2005, in Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. Born in Greensburg, Pa. on April 16, 1936, Shirley was the daughter of David Earl Croushore and Mary (Olmer) Croushore. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Makarsky, who died in 1995. Over the years, she was employed by Bell Telephone, Great American Food Stores and Brooks Drugs. Shirley was proud to have been the first woman member of the Vestal Elks Lodge 2508, where she has been the lodge Chaplain, enjoyed good times with friends and been active in supporting a local veterans' home. She liked being at her home but also enjoyed family vacations to places such as Walt Disney World, Las Vegas and the beach at Ocean City, Md. She also appreciated the opportunity to return to Greensburg, where she and her husband grew up, to visit the many family members and friends who remain there. Shirley enjoyed life immensely and made the most of each day. Throughout her illnesses of the last year, she remained strong and positive and her sense of humor never diminished. Shirley loved her children and grandchildren dearly and cherished her time with family. As Mom and Grammy, she will be sorely missed by them and her many friends and neighbors in the local community. Shirley is survived by three sons, one daughter and their spouses, Chuck and Theresa Makarsky, Dave and Valerie Makarsky, Jim and Ann Makarsky, and Patty and Al Jochum. She is also survived by grandchildren, Danielle Makarsky, Shawn Makarsky, Erin Makarsky, Julianna Makarsky, Julia Makarsky and Madison Jochum; sisters, Bernie Ludrofsky and Rita Merling; and brother, James Croushore. The family would like to extend many thanks to Dr. Joseph Readling and the entire staff of Broome Oncology at Wilson Square for the sympathetic care that she received. Thanks are also extended to Chris at the Wilson Hospital ICU.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 14 at 9:30 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, N.Y., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 200 Grippen Ave., Endicott. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park, Vestal, N.Y. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home on Tuesday, December 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where Vestal Elks Lodge #2508 will conduct the Lodge of Sorrows Service at 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Vestal Elks Lodge #2508, 2072 Vestal Parkway West, Vestal, N.Y. 13850, on behalf of Shirley Makarsky for the Veterans' Committee.
