MEREDITH CENTER -- Stephen Ellsworth Childs, 89, of Livingston Road, died Saturday. He was born in Ludlow, Mass., the son of the Rev. Irving and Lizzie (Wallace) Childs. He attended schools in Huntington, Mass.; earned a bachelor's of music in 1935 and a bachelor's of science in 1937, both of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.; attended Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C.; and earned a master's of music degree from Boston University. Childs served as a pastor in churches in Lower Waterford, Vt., Benson, Vt., Buckland, Mass., Glencliff and the Weirs. He also taught music in the Rumney School District from 1946 to 1953 and in the Laconia public schools from 1954 to 1956; was a music therapist at the Laconia State School from 1959 to 1978; was an organist at the South Baptist Church in Laconia from 1969 to 1986; and was a self-employed tuner and repairman for pianos and organs.
Survivors include three sons, Irving Childs of Meredith Center, Edwin Childs of Chicago and Robert Childs of Ocala, Fla.; three daughters, Elsie Ivester of Meredith Center, Alice Childs of the Philippines and Ruth Bartlett of Orange Park, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His wife, Lavina (Barr) Childs, died in 1990; two brothers and two sisters also died previously. Burial at Oakland Cemetery.
