Retired Army Maj. Marvin Bliss Clain Jr., 93, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.

Cremation rites were accorded. A private family inurnment will be held at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be provided. Memorials may be made in care of the Family Readiness Group for Wounded Warriors and may be mailed to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where they will be forwarded to the family.

Marvin was born on June 29, 1918, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Marvin and Florence Perry Clain. Marvin married Joyce Ann Wilson on Feb. 28, 1942, in Worcester.

Marvin had a tremendous passion and love for his country and history. After he graduated from Worcester High School, he pursued his passion for his country by attending the Company I Ordnance Officer School in Aberdeen, Md., graduating in 1943, in which he then joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He was proud to be one of the soldiers marching in to liberate Paris, France. Marvin made a career out of serving his country and proudly retired from the U.S. Army as a major in 1961. After his service, Marvin worked for the Ordnance Head Quarters at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in the early '70s.

Marvin's other passions in life included traveling and playing golf.

He is survived by his children (and spouses), Susan (Sam) Bjorkman, Rock Island, Connie Sellers, Moline, Thomas (Patricia) Clain, Bettendorf, and Anne Bliss Holliday, San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Andy (Veronica) Bjorkman, Champaign, Ill., Sarah Bjorkman, Alexandria, Va., Chantelle (Patrick) Kelsall, Chicago, Randy (Amy) Jean, Rock Island, Thomas and Jesslyn Clain, Davenport, Bridget Suzanne (Robert) Wierenga-Keller, Low Moor, Iowa, Gabriel (Dena) Holliday, Austin, Texas, and Willow and Abigail Holliday, San Antonio; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Angus; grandsons, David Bjorkman and Micah Holiday; and great-granddaughter, Charlie Rose Kelsall.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Silver Cross Nursing Center for their compassionate care.
