LEWIS LANDON

Lewis Landon, aged 75, one of Hartford's best known and most highly respected citizens, died at his home on South street Saturday afternoon after a long illness. His death resulted from gangrene of the foot.

A resident of Hartford since he was 9 years of age, Mr. Landon had spent the greater part of his life on the Landon homestead, southwest of the village, until moving to his town home some years ago.

Funeral rites for him were held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. Paul E. Hinkamp of Holland, pastor of the local Congregational church officiating. Interment was at the old cemetery on West Main street.

Out of town relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral included an only son, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Landon of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Russell and Mrs. Henry DeLong of Bangor, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Havens and Gerald Havens of Grand Rapids, and Attorney Albert D. Wing of St. Joseph.

The following obituary of Mr. Landon was read at the funeral rites:

Lewis Landon was born in New Phane, Niagara county, New York, Sept. 20, 1854, and passed away June 29, 1929, making his age 75 years, 9 months, and 9 days.

At the age of 9 years his parents moved to Hartford and settled on the location afterwards known as the Landon farm where he spent his young manhood and most of the remainder of his married life.

Nine years ago the burning of his home and failing health compelled him to give up the quiet country life and the association of his old neighbors he loved so dearly. This last period of his life he has passed in this home enjoying the company of the many friends he so much appreciated.

Although afflicted with his hearing and continually suffering, these good friends would say he always greets us with a pleasant smile.

His life was unassuming, very fond of his home and family. An honest sterling character, who would give rather than take from anyone.

He was married to Esther DeLong in the year 1875, who with one son, D. W. Landon, survive him.
