David Reed Matthews, resident of Boulder Creek, died peacefully at his home on February 3rd after a long illness. David was born in Stockton, CA on November 25, 1935 to Dave and Mildred Matthews. His father ran an advertising agency and his mother was an artist. He attended schools in Stockton. In High School, he was active in the Stockton Judo Club, earning a black belt first degree. He enlisted in the Army and served two years in Korea. After his military service, he worked until retirement for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After retiring, he joined the Golden Spikes. David enjoyed traveling and making new friends. He developed an interest in genealogy and also took up running and participated in the Bay to Breakers cross-city race. Gregarious and compassionate, David will be remembered for his love of life and laughter, and kindness towards people and animals. Wherever he went, he brightened everyone's days with his good-humored banter. His sense of humor and playful personality were also evident in the delight he took in collecting odd gadgets and whimsical toys. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Bowman Matthews and his daughter, Britta Matthews of Boulder Creek, CA; his brother Scott Matthews of Lodi, CA; his sister Nancy Phillips of Virginia. He was predeceased by sisters Ellen Montgomery of Fairfax, CA and Lila Whitfield of Tuolumne, CA. He was a favorite uncle of his nieces and nephews and remained close to all of his relatives and friends. No formal service is planned. His ashes will be scattered at sea. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Santa Cruz SPCA, PO Box 3800, Santa Cruz, CA 95063 or to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 2511 Garden Road, Monterey, CA 92940.
