Celebrating the Life of George Merritt Frederickson, Jr. May 25, 1937 – January 23, 2012

Merritt Frederickson was born in The Bronx, New York, on May 25, 1937. He met his wife, Dorothy May Woolston, at the tender age of eight years while both were attending Creston Avenue Baptist Church in The Bronx. After progressing successfully through the public school system, Merritt graduated from the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades. A great friendship turned into a blessed marriage on June 2, 1957, when Dorothy was 20 and Merritt was 20, too. Merritt was a 1960 graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Aeronautical Engineering. While he was studying for his final exams, their first two children were born: twin sons Richard and Robert.

After he graduated, Merritt put his studies to work at Lockheed Missiles and Space in Sunnyvale, California. His son Jonathan was born in 1961, and his daughter Jeannette was born in 1965. In 1966, after five years with Lockheed, he accepted a position as a contractor for Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) in Denmark. Two years later, he went to work at Heathrow Airport in England. The Frederickson family returned to the United States in 1971, settling in Olney, Maryland. In 1990, they moved into their house in Gaithersburg, MD. Merritt worked for various contractors in the Washington, DC, area until his retirement, when he and his wife Dorothy started a new phase of their lives – visiting relatives and cruising Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico, the Panama Canal, New Zealand, and the Caribbean.

Merritt's faith has always been an important part of his life – starting in New York, continuing in California, Denmark, and England. When they moved to Maryland, Merritt and his family became members of Redland Baptist Church in Derwood. In 1988, the Fredericksons transferred their membership to Seneca Valley Baptist Church in Germantown (now Crossroads Church), a mission church of Redland Baptist. Merritt and Dorothy have also attended Son of David Messianic Congregation for over twenty years.

Merritt loved spending time with people. He made time for family events, kept in touch with friends and relatives, and was willing to help anyone with anything. When they first moved to Maryland, Merritt drove up to New York every weekend for several months to help renovate a kitchen for his mother. Once his children were grown, he helped build his son Jonathan's house in Laytonsville, a lake house in Virginia, and a play set for his son Richard's children. Merritt had a number of house guests over the years, including his mother, his aunt, a French exchange student, and his sons Jonathan and Robert and their families. Merritt loved working on cars, and while living in California and England, Merritt worked on race cars in his spare time. He loved listening to music and always said that his favorite musical instrument was the stereo. Merritt gave his daughter Jeannette a love for music and humor.

Merritt is survived by a very large, blessed family. He will be missed by his wife Dorothy; two sisters, BethAnn Coombs (Paul) of South Carolina and Karen Copeland (Bill) of Vancouver, B.C.; four children, Richard (Joan) of Hagerstown, Robert (Pam) of Silver Spring, Jonathan (Christine) of Laytonsville, and Jeannette Hill (Larry) of Jefferson; twenty-one grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday January 27, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethany Community Church 15720 Riding Stable Road, Laurel, MD. 20707. A reception for those in attendance will follow at 12:00 noon. Those wishing to attend the interment will be leaving the church at 1:15 pm to arrive by 2 pm at All Souls Cemetery, 11401 Brink Road, Germantown, MD 20876.

In lieu of flowers, the Frederickson family requests that contributions be made to Chosen People Ministries with BROWS on the memo line or go online to www.chosenpeople.com and designate the gift for Scott Brown. The mailing address is: Chosen People Ministries, 241 East 51st Street, New York, NY 10022-6502.
