TUNNELL DEATH TOLL GROWS
With the death last week of Homer Stapleton of Livermore, who was struck by a falling boulder while working in a drift from the Mitchell Ravine shaft, the toll of life on the Hetch Hetchy tunnel through the Livermore hills was brought to 80.
Mitchell Ravine where Stapleton was injured has been the hooded shaft of the project. It was in the part of the tunnel where 13 men were killed in an explosion. Several others were killed by falling down the shaft.

80TH VICTIM OF HETCHY JOB DIES
Livermore March 25 – Homer Stapelton, 22, Hetch Hetchy worker, died in Hetch Hetchy hospital yesterday from a fractured skull sustained when he was struck by a falling rock February 8 in the Mitchell tunnel. His death brings the toll of lives lost in the project to 80 since the work commenced.

MYRTLE PEARL STAPLETON b. 16 Dec 1907 in Montana d. 21 Nov 1999 in Medford, Oregon. She married Peter Casper Berger in 1923 in Montana – one unknown child, divorced and married James Buchanan Simpson in 1927 – one child: Lois Jean (1928-2009).

HOMER WALTER STAPLETON b. 17 Apr 1908 in Montana, d. 17 Mar 1932 in Livermore, CA. I don't know if he married. Homer was injured and sustained a fractured skull when hit by a falling rock on February 8 while working at Hetch Hetchy on the Livermore, CA Mitchell Water System Tunnel and died March 17, 1932. VALENE JUDITH STAPLETON b. 14 Feb 1911 in Moore, Montana, d. 3 Sep 1947 in California. She married Clarence D. Fyffe (b. 1907) on 04 Aug 1928 in Montana and divorced 1936 - One child: Wm. C. Fyffe (1929-2000). In the 1940 census it states that Valene was single and was living in Grass Valley, CA with her parents and worked as a soda clerk in an ice cream store. It also states that in 1935 she lived in Grass Valley, CA. Valene's last name at time of death was Province.

JANIE MAE STAPLETON b. 4 May 1915 in Montana, d. 27 Jun 1981 in Carmichael, California. She married a Guissi. She is interned in the Lakeside Cemetery and Mausoleum in Folsom, Sacramento County, California. Find A Grave Memorial# 56991995.

PAULINE ELIZABETH STAPLETON b. 1917 in Montana – Unknown after 1920 MT. Census.

MARY ALDEEN STAPLETON b. Oct. 1918 died at birth in Montana.

MILLISSIA GRACE STAPLETON b. 19 Sep 1921 in Montana and d. 31 August 2000 in California. She married Thomas H. Berriman, Jr. on 26 Oct 1937 in which Valene and Bessie were witnesses at the wedding and living in Grass Valley, CA. She married Nicholas J. Weisgarber and they divorced in Jul 1973 in Sacramento, CA. She went by Grace and died with the last name of Weisgarber.

Inscription

There is no marker for this grave. I have put two American flags as shown in the photos that I posted indicating where he is supposed to be buried as told to me by the cemetery owners.

Gravesite Details

Interment records indicate that Homer Stapleton is buried in Section 30, Row 4, Grave 4 but his grave is not marked. His burial is in a dry area.
