Jacob and his brother Johann Georg came to Texas in 1846 with many of their fellow countryfolk, seeking a safer, better life. He married Christine Behrens in 1858 and they raised 10 children. In 1865, after enduring many setbacks and much hardship, he developed, built and then flew the first powered, manned airship in the United States, 38 years before the Wright Brothers. In 1967, then Governor of Texas John Connally bestowed on him the title: "The Father of U.S. Aviation".
