Wellington was the son of Phineas W. and Susannah Chidester. On December 25, 1851 in Lewis County, Virginia he married Mary Linger, daughter of Philip McNemar and Sarah Cutright Linger. They were the parents of Sarah J, Cliinton L., Granville M., Lane Breckenridge, Fanny F., Alvin Lloyd, John Columbus, Mary, Roy Vincent and Charles.
Following the death of first wife Mary Linger he married Mary V. Mohler in 1894 and following her death he married Olive Jane Gsston Morris in 1897.

The Weston Democrat, Fri. 19 Jan. 1912: "CHIDESTER, WELLINGTON V., died at his home on the 11th, aged 86 years. Born on French Creek, in what is now Upshur county in 1826. Married 1852 on Christmas Day to Mary Linger, daughter of Philip Linger. Spent nearly all his long life in Lewis county. Funeral services at home on Center Avenue, Weston on Friday. Interment in the Georgetown cemetery."

"...Survived by wife, Mrs. Olive Chidester and six children. Sons, L.B. Chidester of Buckhannon; John C. Chidester of Weston; Roy V. Chidester, Frank Chidester of Denver, Colorado. Sons, Lloyd and Granville M. Chidester died some year since. Survived by daughters, Mrs. Sarah J. Rittenhouse, wife of S.O. Rittenhouse; Mrs. Fannie McCray, wife of A.J. McCray. Father of sixteen children, all of whom, with the exception of those named, died in infancy and early boyhood and girlhood...."
