Hanns H. Loewenbach
Virginia Beach - Hanns "Opa" H. Loewenbach, passed away on January 30, 2012. Hanns was born in Germany to the late Luis and Meta Loewenbach. He is predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Loewenbach in 1958; second wife, Jutta Loewenbach in 2006; and by his sister, Alice Kohlberg in 1993. Hanns, a Holocaust survivor, moved to the United States after the war and shortly thereafter began working for Custom Shop Shirts, where he worked for over 30 years before he retired. He was an active member at the Jewish Center of Sussex County in Newton, NJ, where he often served as the cantor on the High Holidays. In 1988, he moved to Virginia to be closer to his grandchildren, where he was a congregate of Beth El for 23 years. While in Virginia, Hanns began speaking about his experiences in the Holocaust at local schools and military bases, throughout the years speaking to over thousands of school children and military personnel up until his last days of life. He felt compelled to share his experience with others and spreading his message that "Evil does not need your help; only your indifference." Hanns was an active beachgoer, a dapper dresser, and a swimmer even to his late years. He was proud to be a United States citizen and tried to embrace all of today's modern technology including using email to stay in touch with family and friends across the world. Hanns was a fiercely independent man who loved his Judaism and despite all his hardships, always did his best to bounce back. Left to cherish his memory are his three children, Miriam Becker (Steven), Dr. Gail Sobel (Richard), and Ben Loewenbach; grandchildren, Rachel, Alan, David Becker, and Dean, Haley, Jesse Sobel. Funeral service will take place at Beth El Temple in Norfolk on Wednesday, February 1 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rabbi Arnowitz officiating the service.
