His parents, Ida and Samuel Eagle, were founding pioneers of the West Yellowstone, Montana, townsite. They received a business permit in 1908, and opened a general store. Eagle's Store is now in it 95th year of operation, and it is still managed by family members. Ed always looked forward to annual trips to Montana for family reunions, the Eagle Company meetings, and sharing stories of his youth. He and his brother Sam authored West Yellowstone's 70th Anniversary, 1908-1978.
After earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Montana State University in 1930, in Bozeman, Montana, Ed taught mathematics at several high schools throughout the state. In 1937, he married Marjorie Foote of Billings, Montana, who was also a high school teacher. Shortly thereafter they moved to Palo Alto, Ca, where Ed earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees at Stanford University.
In 1946, the family moved to San Diego where Dr. Eagle began his 28 year teaching career at San Diego State University. Over the years he served as Department Chairman, SDSU Director of the National Science Foundation, and editor of various mathematics publications. Ed was an avid sportsman and world traveler.
Ed was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and was instrumental in guiding the church in a move from downtown San Diego to is present Mission Valley location. He served on the Board of the church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School classes. He and Marjorie have been members of their church's Challenges Sunday School class for 53 years.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Thomas Nemeth of San Diego; grandson Major Thomas Nemeth, USMC, his wife Susan and their daughters Lea Marie and Hayli of Oceanside; and grandson John Edwin Nemeth, his wife Rachel and their daughter Hannah of Redondo Beach. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters who live in Montana.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 11am at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. The family suggests memorial gifts be given to First United Methodist Church or the Eagle Family Foundation, (PO Box 280, West Yellowstone, Montana 59758).
