Silas enlisted July 26, 1862, from Leeds, age 23, in Company F of the 11th Maine Regiment. He was discharged July 17, 1865.

Silas's parents were Silas Maxim (1814 – 1892) and Anna Raymond (1815 – 1850). He married Lucretia Marie Raymond (1848 – 1931) on Mar 1, 1884.

His older brother was Andrew Jackson Maxim (1844 - 1862). He was killed on Nov 18, 1862 at age 18.
