John was a farmer and served in the Civil War as a private in Company H, 18th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (25 September 1861 - 13 April 1863, cf. Ohio Adjutant General Soldier Grave Register, OSA microfilm roll 3159).

The Agricultural Schedule of the 1870 census shows John's farm to have been 40 ac. 32 ac. were in cultivation, from which he raised 20 bushels of Indian corn. He had 1 milk cow, 2 cattle, 2 sheep, 1 pig, and $30 worth of farm equipment.

Vinton County Republican, Thurs., 12 Apr. 1900, p. 5:

John Carr, aged about 70 years, died at his home near Hamden, Thursday night, of consumption. He was born in Wilkesville, this county, where he has a brother, M.P. Carr, and uncle, Frederick Carr. He taught school in his younger days and served in the army during the Civil war. The deceased was land assessor elect for Clinton Township and had held various local offices which he filled acceptably. He leaves a wife and several grown up children to mourn his departure.
