Myra M. Walter - East Wenatchee, WA

Myra M. Walter passed away in her home on November 23, 2011, at the age of 96. Myra Margaret Elizabeth Miller was born on August 19, 1915, in Ritzville, WA to Weston Otis Miller (1875~1946), a country lawyer, and Elizabeth Walters Miller (1884~1958). She attended Ritzville schools until her junior year and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1933. She attended Whitman College and The State College of Washington (now WSU), graduating with a Bachelors of Education degree in 1938. While at WSC, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Myra taught for four years at Garfield and Roosevelt High Schools in Seattle. When enrollment dropped at the beginning of the war, she left teaching and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, shipping materiel to Adak, AK, and other military outposts. After the war, Myra returned to Ritzville, where she was executive secretary of the local American Red Cross and later, Deputy County Clerk for Adams County. She met her husband, Samuel Walter, at an American Legion dance. They were married in Ritzville on April 3, 1949, and had three children: Otis, Mary and Marcia.

In 1956, the family moved to Wenatchee, where Sam owned and operated a Texaco service station on South Wenatchee Avenue and later on 9th street in East Wenatchee. Myra assisted by keeping the station books. They built a home overlooking the Columbia River in East Wenatchee in 1958, and Myra resumed her teaching career that year, teaching English in the Eastmont School district. She retired in 1975, after teaching typing for many years at Sterling Junior High. She and Sam then enjoyed 12 years of well deserved retirement together. Myra was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO Sisterhood Chapter DZ, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, and Chelan-Douglas School Retirees' Association.

Myra was a kind and caring woman who gave freely to her family and friends. She loved to read and was rarely without a book in her hand. She valued education, encouraged and supported the higher education goals of others, and had an infectious curiosity. As a younger person, she skied, played tennis and ran whenever walking was too slow. She remained physically active all her life, making her first backpacking trip into the Enchantment Basin at the age of 70. Always ready for a road-trip, she traveled in Europe and to all corners of the USA to visit friends and family, content to return home to the mountains and the river that she loved. She supported the development of the Apple Capital Loop Trail and walked happily in the parks until her final days. Myra's life exemplified love of family. Creating and caring for her family was her primary ambition in life, an ambition she fully achieved.

Myra was preceded in death by her husband Sam (1911~1987); her parents; and two brothers, William Richard Miller (1906~1923) and Weston Walters Miller (1910~2001), both of Ritzville. Having married into a large family, Myra was very fond of the eight sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law who passed before her, including three local residents, Martha Koch, Alma Koch, and Frieda Lind. She also mourned the loss of her sister-in-law, Erma Miller and her lifelong friend, Gerry Bauer, both of Ritzville.

She is survived by three children, Otis Walter (Sally) of Mandeville, LA, Mary Walter Allen (Nick) of Redmond, and Marcia Walter (Chris) of East Wenatchee; two grandchildren, Allison Walter Venner (Mark) of Alexandria, VA and Melissa Walter Manning (Matt) of Baton Rouge, LA; and one great-granddaughter, Adelaide Venner. She is also fondly remembered by the many nieces and nephews that she loved.

The family will have Private Gatherings this summer in East Wenatchee and at the Ritzville Cemetery.
