Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Burnsed Powers, 76, widow of Richard Powers, were held at the Church of Christ Wednesday morning, 22nd, at 10:00 o'clock, the Rev. H. Allen of Tampa, officiating. The interment was made in the family mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery, beside the remains of her late husband.
Pall bearers were Sidney Powers, Audrey Powers, Rudolph Powers, Donald Powers, Lee Garrett and Winfred Powers, all grandsons of the deceased.
The funeral and interment was one of the largest attended ever held in Macclenny and the many the man and costly floral offerings attested the very high esteem in which Mrs. Powers was held.
Mrs. Powers would have been 77 years of age on the 25th of next July. She was married to Richard Powers in 1870, when they settled just across the river in Georgia where they developed some fine farming and accumulated considerable property.
They moved to Macclenny in 1901, where Mr. Powers entered the naval stores business and the manufacture of lumber. He still continued to accumulate money and property and at the time of his death, January 11, 1929 he was one of the wealthiest men in the section.
Mrs. Powers joined the Church of Christ about 25 years ago, and has since been one of the most devout and loyal members, attending services many times when she had to be carried and in great physical pain.
She was one of the most loyal and devoted wives and mothers it has ever been our good fortune to encounter and she was loved and revered by all with whom she came in contact. She will be greatly missed in this community , where she has ever stood ready to aid the needy and relieve the afflicted.
Mrs. Powers was the mother of 14 children, 7 of whom are living. They are A.D. Powers, Arthur J. Powers and Herman F. Powers of Macclenny; Mrs. L. B. Williams, Mrs. O. K. Garrett, Mrs. C. H. Ellis and Mrs. J. C. Mackey of Macclenny. There are 19 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
The Press joins the large circle of friends of the bereaved family in extending sympathy.
