On September 11, 1943, the destroyer USS Rowan, DD 405 was on screening patrol in the Med. She was on screening patrol escorting empty ships back to Oran (a major city on the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Algeria) when shortly after one in the morning, the ship was torpedoed by a German e-boat. At a range of 2,000 yards, the Rowan was hit by a torpedo. She sank in less than a minute, taking 202 of her 273 officers and men with her. Killed in Action.
